(Mk 16:15-20) Great Commission and 7 Prophetic churches (Rev 1-3)

Commission:  Ephesus      Smyrna      Pergamos            Thyatira          Sardis     Philadelphia   Laodicea

  The four gospels record the birth, life, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.  He came to fulfill all the scriptures in the Old Testament that spoke of Him as the promised Messiah, the eternal Son of God and saviour of the world.  After His resurrection Jesus gave the great commission to his followers to go into all the world and preach the gospel of the Kingdom of God. But first told them to tarry in Jerusalem to receive power from on high (the gift or baptism in the Holy Spirit - see The Great Commission). The firstfruits of the church was birthed on the day of Pentecost (120 believers in the upper room) and grew by the thousands as recorded in the book of Acts 1 and 2.  The gospel was preached first in Jerusalem, Judea and then throughout all of Rome as recorded in the book of Acts which covered a time period known as the apostolic era (first 40 years of the church age).  The book of Acts has no AMEN to it since the church age is still ongoing and growing today. The book of Revelations picks up the history of the church where Acts left off. Rev 1 introduces the resurrected Christ whom John sees as standing among seven churches. John is told to write what he sees and hears to these seven churches. These 7 churches are unique in that they speak prophetically of seven worldwide changes within the church age until the rapture.  These 7 churches are in historical prophetic order in Acts 2 and 3.  The rapture is recorded in Acts 4. Jesus has something to say to each of these prophetic time periods in the church age. Every true believer will identify himself withone of these churches. When each prophetic church period was fulfilled its historical changes continued on down through church history right up to the rapture in the people that they represented.  Today, their are churches and denominations that are a result of one of these 7 worldwide prophetic historical changes in the church age.

Ephesus

wpe123.jpg (1112 bytes)

Rev 2:1-7

End of Acts to about 100 AD.

1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;
2 I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil; and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

  The church of Ephesus is prophetic of the change that came over the church after the Apostles died. The church had to deal with false apostles that were found out to be liars.   Jesus commends them for their good works, labor and patience but lets them know they have left their first love. They began to do things out of love for their church rather than Christ and the church began to be an organization rather than an organism. They are commended for hating the works of the 'Nicolations' which means 'conquerors of the laity'. This was the beginning of a priesthood where their were those that set themselves above others by man made appointments rather than the Lord calling them with the seal of the Holy Spirit.

Smyrna

wpe123.jpg (1112 bytes)

Rev 2:8-11

100 - 300 AD

8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
  The Jews that were of the synagogue of Satan is referring to those that were calling themselves Christians but in reality were tares (unsaved people) Satan was planting in the church. During the Roman Empire many Christians were persecuted unto death and thrown into prison for their faith for saying the Jesus is Lord rather than the emperor. Jesus told them this time of persecution would last 10 days. 10 is a round number when used prophetically and means any number. However, many scholars teach the 10 days could refer to the 10 Roman Emperors who persecuted the Christians during their reign.

Pergamos

wpe123.jpg (1112 bytes)

Rev 2:12-17

300 - 600 AD

12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;
13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the
Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.
16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

  Rev 2:13 says that Pergamos was where Satan's seat or throne is. Satan always had a religious system since the time of Nimrod and the tower of Babel. Satan has moved his religious seat of idolatry in every empire since then (Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Grecian). During the Roman Empire at the time John received these messages for the churches it was Pergamos. The deeds of the priestly system that was developing during the church of Ephesus have now become the doctrines of Satan's mystery Babylon religion that was infiltrating the church. Satan changed his mystery Babylon religion to accommodate Christianity which he could not wipe out with all the persecutions of Roman emperors.  After the death of Diocletian two men contended for the throne of the Roman Empire - Constantine in the West and Maximus in the East. The night before the great battle Constantine said he had a vision to conquer with the sign of the cross. Constantine won and made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire.  Whatever your religious background was it was popular now to be a Christian. There is no evidence Constantine was a true Christian but under him the state and the church got married and the church became the holy Roman church which was neither holy or Roman but a corrupted church.

Thyatira

wpe123.jpg (1112 bytes)

Rev 2:18-29

600  - 1500 A.D.

18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;
19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.
20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.
25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.
26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the
end, to him will I give power over the nations:
27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
28 And I will give him the morning star.
29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
  A woman in prophecy as a symbol is said often to symbolize a religious organization or the church. Rev 12 uses the sun-clothed woman to show the separation of the saved and unsaved within the church at the rapture while Rev 18 is the great whore (called Mystery Babylon - see great christian tribulation - page 2; fall of Babylon) which is Satan's great church of the last days. Satan's church has evolved over every past world empire to accommodate changes that will give her political and religious power over the nations.  After Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire Satan was at work to extend his satanic religious and idolatrous control over the nations.  Later in Constantine's reign over 400 bishops met and carried Constantine on a golden throne to make him head of the church.   Jezebel - a woman in the Old Testament who infiltrated Israel to commit fornication and idolatry symbolizes in these verses a religious system that was well under way with such Babylonian teachings as popes, cardinals, dioceses, religious pomp, ceremonies, ritualistic motions of the arms, robes, miters, incense, crucifixes, images, thrones, holy water, shrines, relics, purgatory, indulgences, charms,superstitions and the central feature is an earthly throne. The church of Thyatira itself is not Jezebel but had to contend with her. During the dark ages the religious system contended for the power to rule all of Rome.  Jezebel still lives today and is now infiltrating the churches with new age teachings and doctrines of devils that will be very prevalent during the reign of antichrist. The Jezebel of the past has been and is is evolving into that great whore of Rev 17 in the future. Rev 18 described how God will judge her. These judgements match the exact judgements that God says will happen to Jezebel in verse 22, 23. She and her children will be thrown into the fire of affliction.  Rev 18 shows how Babylon will be destroyed in 1 hour. Many believe the angel flying overhead in this chapter and dropping a millstone is the acting out of dropping an atomic bomb. Rev 18 says that all the nations stood afar off for the fear of her torment - meaning radioactive fallout.

Rev 18:15

15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
16 And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
17 For in one hour so great riches is
come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, 18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

Sardis

wpe123.jpg (1112 bytes)

Rev 3:1-6

1500  - 1900 A.D.

1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard,
and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.
5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
  Protestant reformation was a break away from the catholic church.  Denominationalism restored particular truths that had existed in the early church but yet these denominational churches retained many works that were dead. The reformation gave rise to great leaders of the  Protestant movement (Martin Luther, John Knox, Thomas Cranmer.  A major theme was that the just shall live by faith (Eph 2:8,9)
as opposed to dead works. Lutherism spread to Germany, Prebysterian to Scotland, Anglicanism to England and the Puritan movement where John Wesley  taught faith toward God ,water baptism by immersion, sanctification and healing ). To the Sardis church Jesus introduces Himself as one having the 7 spirits of God - that is the fullness of the Holy Spirit (Isa 11:1,2). Jesus was saying to these churches that had been birthed that they were to also seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit to move within their churches and not simulate an atmosphere where the fullness of the Holy Spirit could not move.
Isaiah 11:1-2

1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the
fear of the Lord;

Philadelphia

wpe123.jpg (1112 bytes)

Rev 3:7-13

1900 - 200? A.D.

7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.
10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also
will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
  Around the turn of the 20th century almost parallel with Zionism God began to pour out His Spirit outside of denomination walls. There was an awakening that the dark ages are past and the restorational truths of the Sardis period (see above) water baptism, sanctification, healing, deliverance, baptism in the Holy Spirit brought the church to a place where God could not only fill them with the Spirit but pour out His Spirit as in the days of the early church.  With these latter rains their was an eye toward the soon return of Christ where they would rule from Zion with Him in His Kingdom. The desire to evangelize and fulfill the great commission to hasten the coming of Christ was felt in earnest.  This was a time of great missionary outreach to all the world with the full technological means at hand; radio, television and now the internet. This current movement will continue right on throughout the rise and reign of antichrist before the rapture (time frame 1). denominational walls that separated believers because of doctrine will dissolve as Christians practice brotherly love across doctrine and racial divides.  This church will have within itself the 5 fold ministry (Eph 4:11) of apostles and prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. This church will operate in the fullness of the gifts of the Spirit and do the great works Jesus commanded them to do in the great commission.  Though they will be a great falling away from the faith during the reign of antichrist before the rapture during the church period known as Laodicea church (the last of the 7 churches - see below) the Spirit-filled churches will get stronger and be ready to cross over Jordan and possess that which is their inheritance in Christ.To this Church movement Jesus has the key of David which harkens back to Rev 1 where Jesus is introduced as having the keys of hell and of death.  As sure as God is going to raise David from the dead at the rapture so he will raise up both the dead and living at the raptureTo this Church Jesus says that he will keep them from the trouble that is going to come upon the whole world. This would be the great 3 1/2 year christian tribulation and the 7 year Day of the Lord . How will Jesus deliver the believers? - the rapture. This is further confirmed by Jesus saying that before them He has put an open door. John, after been told of the seven churches, looks up (Rev 4) and hears the voice as a trumpet telling him to come up. He looks and sees an open door and immediately he is caught up to God's throne. What happens to John is a picture of what will happen to every believer living at the coming time of trouble upon the whole world. Daniel 12:1,2  says the same thing - that the dead and living shall be delivered from a time of trouble such as never was nor ever shall be. The synagogue of Satan again as mentioned earlier to the church of Smyrna are Satan's tares among the wheat that he has planted. One day they will have to bow before us and before the Lord and say that Jesus is Lord. As it is written - every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.

Laodicea

wpe123.jpg (1112 bytes)

Rev 3:14-22

200? A.D.  - rapture

14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans
write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot:
I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold
nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous
therefore, and repent.
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

  During the pre-rapture reign of antichrist (see time frame 1, timeframe 2 and timeframe 3) there will be a great falling away because of the satanic deception and popularity of antichrist. He will deny the Father and Son relationship and replace God with a 'God of forces' (see Daniel 11 page 3.  He will promote the worship of a new and strange god that he will honor with silver and gold but who in reality is Satan himself. To this church Jesus introduces Himself as the faithful and true witness of God as opposed to antichrist - the liar and false witness.  Jesus also introduces Himself as the beginning of the creation of God for He himself created all things in the beginning (Col 1:14-17). This is in contrast to the lie of Satan through antichrist that creation evolved into what it is today. To this church he says their works are neither hot or cold but lukewarm and this church is spewed out of his mouth.  This is what happens to this church at the rapture (also see Rev 12). Unlike the Philadelphia church which is kept from the trial that is coming upon the whole world by being raptured (see Philadelphia church above), this church is left behind. Jesus is seen standing outside the church because this church is to busy been caught up in prosperity, programs, and listening to preaching that makes them feel good but does not bring true repentance and salvation (see timeframe 3 - page 3).Jesus has not given up on this church and is standing outside and knocking on the door.   He is trying to reach the hearts of individuals to come out and sup and fellowship with Him for He alone can give them eternal life and deliver them from the time of trouble to come. Jesus sees their true spiritual condition as blind, poor, and naked and tells them to buy gold from Him. Gold symbolizes being partakers of God's divine nature which makes us joint heirs with Christ and truly rich. The gold of this world will do no good to anyone in the day of trouble for it will be worthless. Jesus prays that they allow the Holy Spirit to anoint their eyes and open them to the truth of their condition and deception.

Revelations 1

1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto
him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:
2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.
3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be
unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;
5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his
Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see
him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending,
saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus
Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And
being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he
laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell  and of death.
19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things
which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;
20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my
right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

Revelations 2

1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;
2 I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's
sake hast labored, and hast not fainted.
4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because
thou hast left thy first love.
5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and
repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans
write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
